Angier K9 Consultants – Boarding FAQ

Below you’ll find answers to the questions we hear most often from clients after their dog returns home. Use these guidelines to keep your pup comfortable and to know when to call us—or your veterinarian—for extra help.

⸻

Shared Responsibility

Boarding success is a team effort.

• Owner prep matters. Start boarding as soon as puppy vaccinations are complete, or use single-day Daycare visits so your dog learns the kennel is safe and routine.

• Psychological readiness. Early, positive exposure means fewer stress-related issues later in life.

⸻

Boarding Stress

Even confident dogs feel some stress in new surroundings: different smells, new routines, and the sound of other dogs. Highly sensitive dogs—or seniors who once boarded easily—may find it harder. We keep every guest active and mentally engaged, but mild stress signs are normal.

⸻

Weight Loss

• Extra activity (barking, playing, watching staff move around) burns calories.

• High-drive breeds (German Shepherd, Boxer, Hound, Belgian Malinois, Vizsla, Weimaraner, etc.) may drop weight fastest.

• We adjust food amounts as needed, but your dog may still come home a bit leaner.

Tip: Use an online “Active Dog” calorie calculator to estimate ideal daily intake during boarding, then confirm with your vet.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. My dog acts like he hasn’t eaten for a week—did he stop eating in boarding?

No. Most pets eat slightly less in a kennel because the environment is unfamiliar. Once home, they “catch up” and appetite normalizes within a few days. If not, call us or your vet.

2. My dog has loose stool. Did he catch a bug?

True gastrointestinal infections are rare—vaccines and hygiene make boarding safe. Temporary soft stool is usually stress-related colitis triggered by excitement when reuniting with family. It should resolve in a couple of days; see your vet if it doesn’t.

3. Should I switch foods just for the boarding stay?

Please don’t. Sudden diet changes can upset digestion. Bring your dog’s regular food (enough for the whole stay plus two extra days). We’ll feed exactly what they eat at home.

4. Why is my dog sleeping so much?

Kennel life is stimulating—extra play, new smells, and social activity are tiring. Your dog is simply catching up on rest. Energy should return to baseline within 48 hours.

5. My dog is guzzling water. Is that normal?

Yes. Some dogs drink less while boarding and re-hydrate at home where they feel most relaxed. Excessive drinking beyond two days warrants a vet check for issues such as diabetes.

6. Are vaccinations really mandatory?

Absolutely. Proof of current core vaccines (Rabies, DHPP) and Bordetella is required before check-in. This protects your dog and every other guest.

7. My dog is suddenly clingy and anxious when I leave the room. Help!

Mild separation anxiety is common after boarding. Return to your normal routine quickly, give plenty of praise, and avoid reinforcing clingy behavior. Most dogs settle within a week.

8. Do all kennels follow the same rules?

Policies vary. Always ask about:

• Food options and whether you can supply your own

• One-on-one playtime or daycare availability

• Approved personal items (beds, toys)

• Emergency medical protocols

• Willingness to administer medications

9. What should I know about kennel cough?

Kennel cough is an airborne respiratory infection that spreads anywhere dogs congregate. Stress and close quarters can lower resistance. Vaccination reduces severity, but no vaccine offers 100 % immunity. Call us if you notice a dry, hacking cough post-stay.
